Spyware, an ever increasing threat, is computer software which collects confidential information about computer users lacking their consent. In the year 1995, the term was coined but was not broadly used for the next five years or so. Now, the term Spyware is often used as a substitute of malware and adware. Adware is the software which is used to infiltrate a computer and, Malware is the software which damages a computer.
Confidential information is clandestinely stored with different kinds of methods, such as, logging keystrokes, scanning documents stored in the hard disk and internet browsing history. Spyware can bring together various kinds of information. Some alternative spyware tries to track the visited WebPages of a user and advertising agencies use these information. Some malicious variants are even more dangerous, as those try to seize the credit card numbers or passwords and then enter into a web application form as a user.
This alarming rate of spreading spyware is also the cause of the development of anti spyware companies. Its products disable or remove existing spyware in the hard disk drive of the computers and prevent the installation of such spyware software. However, lots of companies have built-in forms with their products of spyware. These softwares are not malware, but are spyware as they are for advertising uses.
It is disputable that, whether such ‘legal’ uses of spyware/ adware are malware or not, since, generally the user has no idea of these programs being installed in computer and he/ she is uninformed of the infringement on his/ her solitude. These applications use the resources of a user without his/ her approval in any case.
Unlike worms and viruses, generally spyware does not self-replicate. Like many contemporary viruses, spyware takes advantage of spyware infected computers for business use. Some approaches which further this objective consists of release of spontaneous pop-up commercials, private information theft, internet browsing activity monitoring etc. Spyware doesn’t openly spread like computer worms or viruses.
Normally, an infected computer does not aim to infection transmission to other systems but, through deceiving the user or through making use of software susceptibilities, it gets on a computer system. The dispenser of spyware generally presents software as effective utility for example, as a handy software agent or as a Web accelerator. Users immediately download and install the application without being informed about its harmful effect.
For instance, Bonzi Buddy, a spyware program which targets at children, states that, it is a friend of them, it will joke, walk, talk etc. with them and he is free. It can also spread by music CDs, downloadable software etc. It also can trick users by manipulating safety attributes planned to avoid unnecessary downloads. Some spyware programmers contaminate a computer through security loop holes in the browser or in other software.
An infected machine is usually infected by not only one spyware at a time but also many other software. A user should be very careful of his every step while using his/ her computer.
